The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club
About the Author:

Dorothy L. Sayers
Although she would have preferred to be remembered for her translation of Divina Commedia into
English, Dorothy L. Sayers is best known for her mysteries and the creation of Lord Peter Wimsey, the
debonair aristocratic amateur sleuth in 15 of her mystery books.
Starting with Whose Body? Sayers'
crime mysteries are set between the World Wars. With the help of his
devoted valet Bunter, Lord Peter grows from an aimless returning
soldier into a more grounded, if not more responsible, individual. Bunter is Lord Peter's accomplice in detection until Harriet Vane appears in Strong Poison. Vane is thought to be based on Sayers herself. Lord Peter and Vane solve mysteries from Have His Carcase and Gaudy Night to Busman's Holiday when they finally marry. Many
of Sayers' books have been made into movies and plays. Lord Peter was
played by Edward Petherbridge in the early series, and Ian Carmichael
portrayed him in the TV series of the 80's. Harriet Walter was the
popular Harriet Vane in the TV adaptation of Murder Must Advertise. The Nine Tailors and Gaudy Night were also commercial successes. The other books in the Lord Peter Wimsey series are: Clouds of Witness, Unnatural Death, The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, Lord Peter Views the Body, and In The Teeth of the Evidence. The respected British author died in 1957.
