P. D. James spent over thirty years in Britain's Civil Service and Police and Criminal Law Department of the British Home Office. She has been the recipient of numerous honors and prizes in Great Britain during her lifetime, and in 1991 she was created Baroness James of Holland Park. She was awarded the Grand Master Award from Mystery Writers of America in 1999. Adam Dalgliesh was an investigator for New Scotland Yard when James introduced him in her first novel, Cover Her Face, in 1962. Dalgliesh has been promoted to Commander Dalgliesh in the latest James novels. P.D. James, whose full name is Phyllis Dorothy James White, was born in London, England in 1920 and makes her home there.
