Arthur W. Upfield
Arthur W. Upfield, an Australian by adoption, was the first non-American to be admitted to the Mystery Writers Guild of America. He was born in England but his father banished him to Australia. There he worked at various jobs in the Outback, served in the Australian Imperial Forces during World War I. and married an Australian Army nurse, Ann Douglass. He turned to writing after the War. His mystery novels featuring half-white, half-aboriginal Detective Inspector Napoleon Bonapart (Bony) of the Queensland Police were popular, and are still popular, with American and English readers, but not particularly so with Australians. Upfield left his wife in 1946. He lived with Jessica Hawke until his death in 1954. He went on yearly "Walk Abouts" until poor health prevented it. He died in Australia in 1964.
