Taking the Fifth
About the Author:

J. A. Jance
Judith Ann (J. A.) Jance's writing career is proof that if you write what you know, you will be a success. Every novel had its start in some event or location or personal interaction with someone at some time during her life. She was born in Watertown, South Dakota, raised in Arizona, and graduated from the University of Arizona. Her career began as an elementary teacher, but she went on to become a librarian. She sold insurance to provide for her two children when her first alcoholic husband did not provide for them. He did provide the character of Seattle homicide detective J. P. Beaumont in one of her popular series of crime mysteries. Unlike her husband, J. P. Beaumont does overcome his alcoholism. Her experiences as a single mother went into the background for Sheriff Joanna Brady who is left with a young daughter when drug dealers killed her lawman husband. The Joanna Brady series is set in Arizona. Jance is a big supporter of charities, and asks book stores to donate a percentage of their profits from her appearances to local charities. She and her second husband Bill live in Seattle, Washington.
