Laurie R. King

    Laurie R. King is a multi-talented writer of detective mysteries. She writes in the English dialect of Sherlock Holmes in the early 1900's in the Mary Russell Series. A teen-aged Mary Russell meets an older Sherlock Holmes in The Beekeeper's Apprentice, and to date have partnered through eight mystery novels. King's second series is set in today's San Francisco and stars fictional SFPD police officer Kate Martinelli. The first book in this series, A Grave Talent, received the Edgar Award for Best First Novel in 1994. King has been awarded two other Edgars and a Macavity Award.
    King has a BA in comparative religion, an MA in Old Testament Theology, and an honorary doctorate from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. While her education might indicate a conservative view, her novels reflect a warm open-minded acceptance of diverse beliefs. She has traveled to exotic places rarely visited by Americans, and her contacts with those whose lives are so different from hers have undoubtedly helped shape her opinions.
      King was born in northern California. She now lives in the Monterrey, California area.
