Malpractice in Maggody
About the Author:

Joan Hess
Joan Angela Hess is the acclaimed author of the Maggody and Claire Malloy mystery series. She books are filled with eccentric characters involved in quirky situations. Arly Hanks, the Police Chief of Maggody, Arkansas, returned there after a messy divorce. Her efforts to resolve crimes and capture murderers in a community where half the town carry the surname of Buchanan make for a hilarious read. A pilot film starring Kate Jackson as Arly was made in 1993 but was not picked up by any of the networks. The pilot can be found online occasionally. Hess' Claire Malloy series has characters that are more "ditzy" than "odd-ball" as in the Maggody series. Claire Malloy is a bookseller and amateur sleuth with a teen aged daughter Caron. Caron and her best friend Inez create as many problems for Claire as they help Claire resolve. Hess is a member of the Sisters in Crime and is president of the Arkansas Mystery Writers Alliance. She has won numerous awards, including the Agatha Award, the McAvity Award, and the American Mystery Award. She lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
