The Return of Sherlock Holmes

About the Author:

Arthur Conan Doyle

While Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote many novels in a variety of genres, his Sherlock Holmes novels are his claim to writing fame. Holmes, who was partially modelled after Poe's C. Auguste Dupin, first appeared in A Study in Scarlet. Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and based Dr. Watson on himself. Doyle was not a successful practitioner of medicine neither does Dr. Watson appear to have a medical practice.  There were only eleven Sherlock Holmes stories, but they have been  told many times in movies and on TV over the years, making Holmes one of the best-loved, although most eccentric, detectives of all time.
