John D. MacDonald
John D. MacDonald began writing short stories when he was stationed in the OSS in the Burma-China-India Theater of WW II and sold many of his various science fiction, sports, and adventure stories to magazines before he began writing novels. He wrote over forty novels before he started writing the Travis McGee series. He began the series upon the urging of his publisher and wrote twenty-one Travis McGee private detective novels before he died. The McGee novels all have a color in the name: The Deep Blue Good-by, Nightmare in Pink, A Purple Place for Dying, etc. He based the character of Meyer, McGee's pal and neighbor, on himself. Several of MacDonald's novels have been made into movies. The Executioners was filmed as Cape Fear in 1962 and again in 1991. Soft Touch was made into the movie Man-Trap in 1962. Several other novels were made into TV movies: The Girl, The Gold Watch & Everything and Condominium. MacDonald was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, and lived in Florida, which was the setting for most of his stories. The Mystery Writers of America awarded him their Grand Master Award in 1972. He was awarded the American Book Award in 1980. He died in 1986.
