Sara Paretsky
Sara Paretsky revolutionized the hard-boiled detective genre when she created her tough, street-smart, female private investigator V I Warshawski. V I, as she is called in the thirteen novels, is independent and impulsive, traits that get her into trouble in some of the worst sectors of Chicago. V I made her appearance in 1982 in Indemnity Only. Her next V I Warshawsky novel, Bleeding Kansas, will go on sale in December, 2007.
V I appears to be the antithesis of her creator. Paretsky grew up in Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago. However, both Paretsky and her protagonist are strong supports of women's rights and have a strong sense of justice. She founded the Sisters in Crime organization to support women mystery writers and the Sara and Two C-Dogs Foundation to support women in the arts and sciences.
She has lived in Chicago with her professor husband since 1968.
