born in South
Bend, Indiana and has lived there for all but three years of
her life. Her Hilda Johansson series is set in Indiana in the early 1900's. Hilda Johansson is an intrepid amateur detective who works as a maid in the home of the wealthy Studebakers. Her relationship with fireman Patrick Cavanaugh, disapproved of by her Swedish Protestant family and his Irish Catholic one, depicts the attitudes of the time period. Hilda solves the murder of a woman missionary home from China and found on the Studebaker estate in the first book of the series Death in Lacquer Red. Ms. Dams loves England and her first publlished mystery, The Body in the Transept, introduced protagonist Dorothy Martin who is an older American widow who lives in the English town of Sherebury. She was awarded the Agatha Award for the best first novel of 1995 for The Body in the Transept. There are eight other Dorothy Martin books in the series: Trouble in the Town Hall, Holy Terror in the Hebrides, Malice in Miniature, The Victim in Victoria Station, Killing Cassidy, To Perish in Penzance, Sins Out of School, and Winter of Discontent.
