The Cat Who Said Cheese

About the Author:

Lillian Jackson Braun

Lillian Jackson Braun’s first The Cat Who … book, The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, was published in 1966. There are now 29 mysteries in the series. The most recent books are: The Cat Who Smelled a Rat, The Cat Who Robbed a Bank, and The Cat Who Saw Stars. The books center around Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats Yum Yum and Koko, short for Kao K’o Kung. KoKo appears to have a sixth sense about crime and murder that he uses to aid Qwilleran in his amateur sleuthing.
The earlier The Cat Who …books were set in the city, where Qwill was a reporter and real Man About Town. He mellows out after he moves to Pickax, located in Moose County, “400 miles north of everywhere” and the setting for the majority of The Cat Who … books.
The Cat Who … readers regard Qwill’s friends as their own. Arch Riker is Qwilleran’s childhood best friend and features editor at the Fluxion, the local weekly newspaper for which Qwilleran writes a general interest column called “Straight from the Qwill Pen”. Odd Bunsen is the Fluxion photographer who often works with Qwilleran. Polly Duncan, the local librarian, is Qwilleran’s love interest and first appeared in The Cat Who Knew Shakespeare. Pickax Chief of Police, Andrew Brodie, is the sounding board for Qwilleran’s explanations of crime solutions. He and Qwilleran share information that helps Qwilleran solve the crimes.
Lillian Jackson Braun once lived in Bad Axe, Michigan, a town much like Pickax. She now lives in North Carolina with her husband and two cats.
