The Big Four

About the Author:

Agatha Christie

Dame Agatha Christie, the beloved English "Queen of Crime", wrote 66 mystery novels all of which have been made into movies, television shows, and plays. The Guinness Book of World Records says she is the best-selling writer of all time next to William Shakespeare. Partly for her writing and partly for her activities during WWI on behalf of the British government, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1971.
She has created some of the best-known fictional detectives of all time. The Mysterious Affair at Styles introduced the Belgian detective  Hercule Poirot, a dapper, moustache-twirling eccentric played memorably in a TV series by David Suchet. Miss Jane Marple, "the typical old maid of fiction" first appeared in The Murder at the Vicarage. She appeared in 12 novels and 20 short stories. And Then There Were None, also known as Ten Little Indians (originally Ten Little Niggers.), has been re-named and made into movies and stage plays.  Tommy and Tuppence Beresford had their own series of books starting with The Secret Adversary.  Harley Quin appears and disappears unexpectedly by tricks of light. Ariadne Oliver is a feisty middle-aged detective novelist who thinks Scotland Yard could be run better by a woman.  The plump, sixty-ish Parker Pyne creates elaborate charades to fool the suspects and bring happiness to everyone.
Her stage play, The Mousetrap, holds the record for the longest run ever in London, and was still running in 2006.
