Maisie Dobbs
During The Great War (World War I) women took many jobs
previously held by men. When the war ended, many of them were reluctant to
return to traditional women's roles. With many men unable to resume their
lives, the 20's and 30's became a time of societal change. The Maisie Dobbs
mysteries allow readers to experience the era and enjoy good mysteries as well.
Maisie began her working life as a maid, but she is caught
reading in her employer's library instead of doing her work. She next tried
college and left to serve as a nurse during the war. After the war she is
mentored by Maurice Blanche who teaches her to be a detective, and she
eventually takes over his practice. Maisie
helped save Billy Beale’s leg during the Great War. After meeting up with him again when she opens her office, she takes him on as her assistant. Together they solve mysteries that have their roots in World War I.
