George Pelecanos

George Pelecanos has written more than fourteen crime novels set in and around Washington, D.C. Comparing the crimes in Pelecanos'  first novels with those in his more recent novels, the reader gains a sense of the changing demographics of the city. Pelecanos has written three series: The Nick Stefanos Series, The D.C. Quartet Series, and the Derek Strange and Terry Quinn Series. His three stand-alone novels, Shoedog, Drama City, and The Night Gardener, include crossover characters from his series novels. Some books in each series don't completely follow a timeline. Hard Revolution, written in 2004 takes the character Derek Strange back to his early days on the police force, but it is the fourth book in his series.  Pelecanos was one of the main writers and producers of the television series, The Wire, for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series.
Pelecanos writes knowledgeably about Washington, D. C., the police department and procedures. Pelecanos, like many of his protagonists, is of Greek-American descent. He was raised in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Silver Spring and lives there with his wife and three children.
