Patricia Cornwell

Patricia Cornwell’s forensic pathologist Dr. Kay Scarpetta is based on Patricia herself. They both worked in forensic science and both had difficult relationships with their fathers. Scarpetta is intense and passionate about her work but has problems with relationships, both qualities that create an underlying tension as well as bring a kind of relief from the often gory details of forensic pathology. There are a total of fourteen Dr. Kay Scarpetta books, the last one, Predator, was published in 2005.
Cornwell’s first novel, Postmortem, won the Edgar, John Creasey, Anthony and MacAvity awards, and the Prix du Roman d’Adventure in one year. She was named Author of the Month in November, 2003. She is the only woman in the United States to win England’s Gold Dagger award.
Cornwell has written other books besides the Scarpetta Series. Her most recent is Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper – Case Closed. At Risk was published in 2006. An earlier lighter series stars protagonist Andy Brazil, a reporter for the Charlotte Reporter, who along with Police Chief Judy Hammer and her Deputy Chief Virginia West, solves crimes in Hornet's Nest, Southern Cross, and Isle of Dogs.
