Alexander McCall Smith's warm affection for the people and country of Botswana shines through his detailed portraits of life in Botswana and Number One Lady Detective, Mma Precious Ramotswe, in his Ladies' Detective Agency series of detective novels. Mma Ramotswe's husband Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni, their two adopted children, and her secretary/office assistant Grace Makutsi are the foundation of Mma Ramotswe's life. The problems her clients ask her to resolve are often simple appearing at first, but then they become complicated with unexpected outcomes. There is always a mystery to be solved, sometimes a death or murder to be solved, before Mma Ramotswe can give her client wise advice about life.
Alexander McCall Smith was born in Zimbabwe and educated there. He later graduated from the University of Edinburgh and went on to teach Medical Law there. He later set up the law department at the University of Botswana. He now lives in Edinburgh and devotes his time to writing books.
